Hyundai Partners with Waymo to Launch Ioniq 5 as Robotaxi

Hyundai and Waymo have entered into a strategic partnership, aiming to integrate Waymo’s autonomous driving technology with Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 electric vehicle. This collaboration marks an important step forward in autonomous transportation.

What to Expect from the Partnership
Waymo plans to deploy the Ioniq 5 as part of its Waymo One ride-hailing service, highlighting the companies’ shared commitment to improving transportation safety and efficiency. José Muñoz, president and global COO of Hyundai Motor Company, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Hyundai and Waymo share a vision to improve the safety, efficiency, and convenience of how people move.”

“Hyundai’s focus on sustainability and its strong electric vehicle lineup makes them an ideal partner as we expand our fully autonomous services,” commented Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.

Not Available for Purchase
While the Ioniq 5 will be outfitted with Waymo’s technology, consumers should note that this vehicle will not be available for personal purchase at dealerships. Instead, Waymo will integrate these vehicles into their existing fleet that operates in select cities such as Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

Production Insights
Ioniq 5s will be manufactured in the United States at Hyundai’s new factory in Georgia. Following production, the vehicles will be equipped with Waymo’s systems in Mesa, Arizona, via a partnership with supplier Magna International.

Muñoz added, “Waymo’s transformational technology is improving road safety where they operate, and the Ioniq 5 is the ideal vehicle to scale this further.”
