Bill Peebles, head of OpenAI’s Sora, shared insights on these developments via a post on X. He indicated that the current model has proven economically unsustainable due to high demand from power users. As a result, OpenAI is planning to scale back the number of free generations to manage its GPU resources effectively.

“Eventually, we will need to bring the free gens down to accommodate growth,” Peebles mentioned. “We won’t have enough GPUs to do it otherwise!”

OpenAI’s proposed monetization strategy aims to allow entities to license their copyrighted materials, including artwork, characters, or likenesses, for additional fees. This concept entails the ability to charge novel fees for cameos from popular characters—a move that some view as risky given the company is currently facing legal challenges over infringement concerns.
