Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro: A Step Towards Easier Battery Replacement
In a recent teardown by iFixit, Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro received a repairability score of 4 out of 10, illustrating slight improvements in battery replacement. Unlike previous models, this iteration allows users to replace the battery without needing to remove the trackpad. However, the overall process remains complicated and may deter many users from attempting a DIY fix.
For those willing to undertake the repair, Apple’s Self Service Repair Store currently provides a Top Case with Battery and Keyboard, which requires purchasing the main chassis part rather than just the battery itself. This means that MacBook Pro owners need to navigate through numerous screws and hardware to complete the battery replacement. Notably, Apple has equipped the latest MacBook Pro with a slightly enhanced 72.6Wh battery, a minor upgrade from the previous model’s 72.4Wh.
While this change signifies progress, iFixit did note that replacing the battery is still “tougher than it needs to be.” The M5 MacBook Pro’s score has decreased from the M1 model, which earned a 5 out of 10, highlighting the ongoing challenges Apple faces in making MacBook repairs more accessible for users.
In summary, while Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro has made minimal strides in repairability, it still presents obstacles for those who prefer handling their repairs independently. As technology and user feedback evolve, hopefully, Apple will continue to work on improving the repair experience for its customers.
