Magic Leap Unveils Android XR Smart Glasses Prototype, Strengthens Partnership with Google
Magic Leap is back in the spotlight with the unveiling of a prototype for Android XR smart glasses, marking a renewed effort in the augmented reality space. The announcement comes alongside an extension of their existing collaboration with Google. Built as a reference design for the Android XR ecosystem, these glasses feature a design reminiscent of other modern smart glasses, incorporating thick frames to house the necessary electronics and a camera lens situated on the left side.
While further details about the prototype remain limited, Magic Leap emphasized that it is working with Google to advance display technologies, aiming for an all-day wearable AR experience by integrating Magic Leap’s waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine. These glasses will run on Google’s Android XR operating system, joining the ranks of the recently launched Galaxy XR headset, the first device to utilize this platform.
Despite facing challenges over the years, including a significant pivot to focus on the enterprise market after disappointing sales of its AR headset, Magic Leap continues to push forward. The company has seen substantial financial backing, most notably from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which has invested over $1 billion since becoming the majority owner in 2022.
Historically, Magic Leap struggled in the consumer market, having sold only 6,000 units of its initial AR headset in six months. The release of the Magic Leap 2 in 2022 signaled a shift towards enterprise applications. In mid-2024, the company also made staffing reductions, primarily affecting sales and marketing teams, while pursuing a strategy to license its technology. Recent reports indicate that Google has brought in a significant number of Magic Leap employees to bolster its efforts in Android XR projects, showcasing the growing collaboration between the two companies.
This new evolution in Magic Leap’s product offerings signals an interesting phase for both the company and the Android XR ecosystem as they navigate the complexities of the augmented reality market.
