YouTube has announced that it will strengthen its enforcement of policies regarding graphic violence in gaming videos and online gambling starting on November 17. Under the new guidelines, videos portraying realistic human characters in violent scenarios, including torture and mass violence against civilians, will be age-restricted.
The platform will assess the extent and visibility of violent scenes in a video. For compilation videos, YouTube will take into account the total duration of scenes deemed graphic. Any video that crosses the age-restriction threshold will be inaccessible to viewers under 18 or those who aren’t logged into their Google accounts. While YouTube hasn’t detailed specific duration limits, a spokesperson indicated that videos may be flagged if they contain prolonged or closely focused violent content. Creators can circumvent these restrictions by blurring any violent imagery within their videos.
In addition to content concerning violence, new rules surrounding online gambling will also be implemented. YouTube has long prohibited content that directs viewers to online gambling sites or applications that are not certified by Google. However, beginning November 17, it will extend these restrictions to include videos about online gambling games that feature items with monetary value, which encompasses both digital assets like NFTs and in-game skins. There will be an age restriction on any content featuring casino-style games, even if they do not involve real monetary stakes.
YouTube plans to review existing videos following the new enforcement dates, removing or age-restricting them as necessary if they violate the updated policies. Notably, creators will not receive strikes if their videos were uploaded prior to November 17. They will have the opportunity to edit their content before the policy change using YouTube’s editing tools, such as trimming or blurring out problematic content.
YouTube’s actions come in response to growing concerns regarding the portrayal of violence and gambling in video content, particularly as the platform continues to evolve and address community standards for safe viewing experiences.
