Apple to Launch Its In-House 5G Modem with iPhone SE 4
Apple is reportedly on the brink of unveiling an updated version of the iPhone SE in 2025, introducing its first-ever in-house 5G modem as a significant advancement in its smartphone technology. This model will be the first upgrade for the budget-friendly SE line since 2022.
According to reports, Apple’s latest iPhone SE, internally referred to as the SE 4, will incorporate the company’s newly developed 5G modem. Following its acquisition of a major part of Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019 for $1 billion, Apple has aggressively pursued self-reliance in modem technology. Despite prior plans to implement its modem, the company has continued to rely on Qualcomm’s 5G modems for its devices.
The history between Apple and Qualcomm is both complicated and contentious. The two tech giants faced off in court in 2017 over allegations of patent violations affecting quick internet connectivity and battery efficiency. They eventually reached a settlement that included a licensing deal allowing Apple access to Qualcomm’s modem technologies until at least 2026.
The upcoming iPhone SE 4 is expected to mirror the iPhone 14’s design and will be powered by the A18 processor, featuring 8GB of RAM. This model will replace the physical home button with Face ID and incorporate camera technology akin to the iPhone 15, including a 48MP rear camera and a 12MP front-facing camera.
The anticipated launch date for the new iPhone SE is set for spring 2025, marking a potential turning point for Apple as it aims to test its proprietary modem technology through this device before extending its application to other models in the future.
