Samsung Confirms Software Update Issues Affecting Older Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung Confirms Software Update Issues for Older Galaxy Smartphones

Samsung has confirmed that a recent update to its SmartThings app has caused significant problems for users of older Galaxy smartphones, particularly models from the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series. The update, which was rolled out over the past few days, has reportedly “bricked” these devices, rendering them unusable and trapped in a boot loop after the installation.

According to a report from 9to5Google, some users experiencing the issue have also reported problems with other models, including the Galaxy M51 and A90. Although there is a potential workaround, performing a factory reset may restore some functionality, it results in the loss of all data that hasn’t been backed up prior to the update.

In a statement to Engadget, a Samsung spokesperson acknowledged the problem, stating, “We are aware that a limited number of Galaxy smartphones running on Android 12 are rebooting continuously during an update to the latest version of the SmartThings app. Upon discovery, we immediately suspended the update and are working to resolve the issue. Affected customers can contact the Samsung Contact Center for support.”

The situation highlights the challenges that manufacturers face when it comes to software support for older devices. The Galaxy S10 series, now five years old, is within a timeframe where companies might choose to reduce regular software updates.
